Getting Your Roof Re-shingled? Here are Answers and Options for Shingles

No doubt about it, Alberta summer is the best time to get work done on your roof. The adhesive we use to make sure the shingles tap down and create a waterproof seal requires some heat from the nice, warm summer sun.

If you’re doing a re-roof or a roof repair on your home or business this summer, you will probably be interested in this article. We’re going to answer a few common questions that our clients have asked us and tell you about some of the shingle products that we use.

We’ll start with some frequently asked questions about shingles. Click here for the full list of roofing FAQ’s if you want more answers to your roofing questions.

1. Can you get exactly the same shade of shingles that I currently have on my home?

This is rarely possible. If your shingles were recently installed incorrectly and you need to redo your roof within a few years, there’s a chance that we can find and use the same brand and shade. Most shingle manufacturers sell different models from year to year, so it’s nearly impossible to get the same shingles that were used on your home decades ago.

Another thing to add would be that product quality and performance of newer products are a lot better than they were years ago, so going with a current shingle is a smart choice.

2. What do you do with my old shingles?

We bring a big garbage bin with us to your home and dispose of all the old shingles and waste in it. When the job is done, we take it to the dump.

3. How long does shingling a house roof take?

It depends on how big your roof is, but generally it will take a day or two, weather permitting.

4. How long will my new shingles last?

How long your shingles will last depends on which shingle product you go with. And on that note, we’ll segue over to the products that we use!

Roofing Shingle Products that we Recommend and Stand Behind

Malarkey Shingles

Malarkey is an innovative brand that has been making shingles since 1960, and their products are well known in the industry to be high-quality, top-performing shingles.

We use several of their shingle products. Each product has different specs but all of them guarantee protection against extreme weather, have a Scotchgard protector that has a 20-year warranty, and are specially formulated adhesives to ensure that they stay in place in windy conditions.

Alaskan
Windsor
Highlander
Legacy

We recently re-roofed a large home in Half Moon Lake with Malarkey Windsor shingles, and it turned out great! One of our best jobs to date. Read the full story here.

Owens Corning Shingles

Owens Corning is another company that has been around for a very long time, even longer than Malarkey, and many homeowners are very happy with their roofs that have Owens Corning shingles installed on them.

Other roofing companies have also lauded them, one being Taylor Builders in Iowa, saying ‘’Owens Corning in my opinion is hands down the best shingle on the market.’’ (Source)

Of course experiences with their products vary, but when installed correctly by roofing professionals like us here at Crest Roofing, you can expect your Owens Corning shingles to last a long time.

The product of theirs that we like to use is called TruDefinition Duration. They give your home a high-end look, they can withstand winds of up to 130 MPH, and are warranted to last as long as you own your home (which is called a Limited Lifetime Warrantee ).

IKO Roofing Shingles

One brand of architectural shingles that we use is the IKO Cambridge Architectural Shingle .

Architectural shingles are heavier, more durable, and longer lasting shingles that will stand up to all kinds of weather and offer greater protection against tree branches falling on your roof and algae growth, for example.

Crest Roofing is on IKO’s list of approved, professional certified roofers. That means that the shingles and installation are guaranteed.

We like IKO Cambridge shingles because not only are they one of the best architectural shingles you can buy, but they also look like high-end designer wood shakes and come in a wide range of colour options, which boosts curb appeal and adds to the value of your home.

BP Roofing Shingles

And finally, BP Canada offers a line of high-performance shingles that will make your roof look fantastic and last a long time. The product we commonly recommend is the BP Mystique .

These shingles are hurricane resistant, and can withstand winds up to 135MPH! They also come with a lifetime warrantee. They are quick to install too because they come in larger than average sheets.

Are you ready to re-shingle your roof? With all the options it can be hard to decide, so give us a call and we can help you choose the best shingle for your needs and budget.

You can reach us at 587-409-2972 or send us a message . We’ll come out and do an inspection and give you a recommendation for the best product to suit your needs.

Trackbacks & Pingbacks

  1. […] Sometimes a tree falls on a roof but doesn’t cause a whole lot of damage. Possibly a few broken shingles or a section of shingles gets ripped off. Or, there could just be a dent or two in the roof. In cases like these, you’ll be glad if you have some extra shingles around because it’s rare that we can perfectly match the colour of new shingles with shingles on a building that were purchased years before.
