This summer we’re working on some homes in Half Moon Lake, which is hamlet about 35 minutes east of Edmonton in Strathcona County. There are only about 100 homes there and most of them are right on the edge of Half Moon Lake. The area is beautiful. The homes are surrounded by trees and visited by wildlife all the time. It’s a peaceful community with some beautiful homes where people get to enjoy lake life while still being close enough to town to be able to pop in whenever they need to.
We have some good friends in that neighbourhood, so when a few of the homeowners in the area were thinking that this was going to be the year to get their roofs redone, they gave us a call.
Of all the homes we’re doing in Half Moon Lake this summer, a few of them had smaller roofs that were all about 15 to 25 years old, which is a long lifespan for a roof, especially one with shingles.
Shingles generally only last about 15-20 years before they need to be replaced, so many of the homes already had leaks despite previous repairs. It was time for full re-roofing on all of the homes we inspected.
Re-roofing a Large Home in Half Moon Lake
The largest house we worked on had big, old cedar shake roofing material covering their roof that was at least 30 years old and falling apart. They were seeing leaks on the inside of the house–around the chimney and on the ceiling–and were ready to get their roof redone.
We went out to do an inspection and give them a quote, which included a recommendation for a great shingle product that would be ideal for their house. We found that it wasn’t worth their money to keep repairing their roof. It would actually improve the value of their home to have a modern, sharp-looking roof that was going to last a long time.
Malarkey Windsor Shingles for a Long-Lasting, Great-Looking New Roof
Asphalt shingles aren’t really known for their long-lasting abilities, but Malarkey Windsor shingles are different. They are top-of-the-line in the shingle world and they have a unique design. They are durable, heavy shingles that are made with an SBS rubber that helps them last a lot longer.
Malarkey Windsor shingles also have a great warranty that includes 15 years of full coverage for any manufacturer defects, labour, and materials.
We gave our clients a couple options, but they went with the Malarkey shingle. We went over the costs together and they ended up being really impressed with the quote we gave them. We started the work soon after the papers were signed.
Because the shingles are relatively new on the market, a representative from Malarkey came out to explain how the shingles worked. He also gave us tips about installation, and made sure the end result was the best possible, which was hugely beneficial for both for the crew and the homeowner.
Even though we were using a special shingle product, our tools for the job were the same as most of our other roofing projects.
- 44 inch ice and water guard
- Synthetic underlay
- Drip Edge (a piece of galvanized metal that helps guide water into the eaves)
- Nail Gun
- Ridge vent that goes along the peak of the roof
We ended up doing three homes in the early part of the summer, and we’re currently working on a couple more. When we finished the big house, the Malarkey shingles looked amazing. Our clients were very happy. They loved the way it looked and how it worked, which was a huge compliment coming from them because one of them works in interior design!
When the roof was done, we went out with a drone to take pictures to share the sharp new roof with our friends and fans on social media.
